Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting Moment

When I read this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge, I immediately thought of two photos that I took last September. I don’t often take “street photography”, so perhaps it isn’t surprising that I immediately thought of these.   We had gone downtown to see Liberty, which sits atop the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, at a street level view. The statue had been through a restoration and for a few days was where people could see it before it was hoisted back into position 240 feet in the air.  (Read more about that trip  here.)

While everybody was taking pictures of Miss Indiana (aka Liberty, aka Crowning Figure), I was people-watching. This man, who seemed a bit annoyed that he was fighting onlookers while trying to make a delivery, seemed interesting.   It was only a second before he was out of frame.   I thought his expression, as well as his profile, was similar to that of the statue he was pushing.

One statue was moving that day — and it wasn’t the one everybody came to see

My favorite series of photographs from that day were of a man and his daughter looking at the statue. She was interested, but very tired and wanting to leave soon.

That’s nice. Can we go now?

And a bonus street photo, one that I took years ago (1980) and that I found recently:

Centre Pompidou, Paris, May 1980

Young and naive, I was a bit afraid of these characters with their “Born to Kill” jackets. Interested in them, but I wanted to keep my distance. A few minutes after I snapped this — I was also shooting a group of mimes who were performing — a young man, who I thought might have been sitting with these guys earlier came up to me and asked if I had taken their pictures. I pretended that I didn’t know a word of French — or of English. I might have missed out on having my film taken from me — or maybe I just missed an interesting conversation.

Yes, life is fleeting. Embrace it while you can and snap a few photos along the way. Remember: Time flies like an arrow. And fruit flies like bananas. (Thank you Groucho!)
